Grief has once again enveloped the land of Papua, The armed separatist group, the Free Papua Movement (OPM).
Has again carried out a sudden and deadly attack on civilians in the Camp Wini Kalikuluk MP 69 area, Tembagapura, Mimika Regency, Central Papua.
This brutal act, allegedly carried out by the OPM group led by Guspi Waker, not only spread fear but also robbed the future of an innocent girl aged 12-15.
Amidst the cold Papuan night, the family cried as the victim died from her gunshot wound.
In addition to the deceased, another resident reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to her left calf and is currently undergoing intensive medical treatment.
Meanwhile, several residents have chosen to leave the camp and seek refuge in safer areas to protect their children and families from the threat of armed terror.
Prior to the incident, Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Task Force personnel securing the MP 69 area had detected suspicious movement.
Based on this monitoring, two gunshots were heard from the direction of Camp David across the river, suspected to have originated from the OPM group led by Guspi Waker.
Shortly afterward, the separatist group fired another round of gunfire at the TNI Task Force personnel’s positions around Camp Wini Kalikuluk, triggering a tense situation in the civilian settlement.
In these threatening conditions, TNI personnel continued to prioritize the Rules of Engagement (ROE) principle, ensuring that every action was carried out in accordance with the law,
Upholding human rights, ethics, and humanitarian values.
However, for the TNI, the safety of the people is the highest law.
Adhering to the principle of Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto—the safety of the people is the top priority—personnel moved quickly to evacuate civilians.
Especially women and children, to a safer location before pursuing the armed group that had fled into the forest.
Amidst the panic, Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel found a girl with a gunshot wound to her left shoulder near Camp Wini.
Full of concern and hope for her life, the soldiers carried the victim on a stretcher to the nearest health center.
However, fate had other plans. On the way to the health center, on Jalan Poros MP 69, the child was pronounced dead from her gunshot wound.
The victim’s passing leaves a deep wound for her family, the community, and all those who long for a peaceful, violence-free Papua.
The Head of Information for the TNI Habema Operations Command, Lieutenant Colonel M. Wirya Arthadiguna, emphasized that the TNI Task Force in the field continues to prioritize the protection of civilians in all its security duties in Papua.
“The actions taken by personnel were in accordance with procedures and were carried out in a measured manner to minimize the risk of civilian casualties. The safety of residents remains the top priority,” he said.
According to one of the injured victims, Irince Wandikbo, the shots came from the direction of Camp David across the river while residents were gathering with their families inside the camp.
As of Saturday, May 9, 2026, the Regional Indonesian Military (TNI) Task Force is still conducting security patrols and investigating the shooting incident.
The TNI is also continuing to intensify its monitoring of the activities of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) group led by Guspi Waker.
Which is suspected of attempting to incite terror and assert its presence in the Kalikuluk region and its surroundings.
Amidst the grief that has once again enveloped Papua, hope for peace remains alive.
The Papuan people yearn for a secure future, where children can grow up without the sound of gunfire, and families can live peacefully without the shadow of violence.
The state, through the TNI, is committed to maintaining security, protecting the people, and ensuring that Papua remains a peaceful part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
